About King David Mowbray Golf Club
King David Mowbray Golf Club offers a scenic parkland course conveniently located near Cape Town’s city centre, with easy access from the N2 highway, which passes between King David Mowbray and Rondebosch Golf Club.
As one of Cape Town’s oldest golf clubs, established in 1910, it carries a rich history. In 2016, the club merged with King David Golf Club, following the closure of its course near Cape Town International Airport. This union brought together two storied traditions, creating a unified venue that honours the legacy of South African golf.
While the course may be shorter than modern layouts, it challenges golfers with its thoughtful design, featuring tree-lined fairways shaped by crosswinds and small, well-bunkered greens. The flat terrain makes it an enjoyable walk, even in windy conditions. In recent years, the course has undergone significant improvements, with its greens now among the most consistently well-maintained in the Cape Peninsula.
Though the SA Open was last played here in 1987, King David Mowbray remains a prominent tournament venue. Recent highlights include hosting the 2020 Cape Town Ladies Open and the 2019 Men’s SA Amateur Championship, where Wilco Nienaber clinched victory. These events continue the club’s proud tradition of hosting top-tier competitions.
From the 1930s through the 1990s, King David Mowbray stood as one of Cape Town’s premier tournament destinations, alongside Royal Cape. Legendary players like Gary Player, Mark McNulty, Vijay Singh, and David Feherty have graced its fairways, leaving their mark on this iconic course. Today, King David Mowbray Golf Club combines historical charm with modern excellence, offering a rewarding experience for players of all levels.
